Simplicity 1998

So after yesterdays post that actual sewing must wait until after my dissertation is written – I have completely ignored that and instead spent yesterday evening trying to salvage Simplicity 1998. This is a dress I made to my size however it is more like a sack – a problem other sewists have found with this pattern, see reviews here.

So in trying to make it more fitted/wearable/flattering – I have added back darts, taken it in at the side seams and added a concealed zip. It does look better on but could still do with losing a bit. Anyway, since I went to great pains to insert the concealed zip (first attempt ever!) I can’t bear taking it all out again to make it a bit smaller. Unfortunately despite my careful-ish calculations, I found out when trying it on for fit last night, that actually I can still slip it over my head and the zip is pointless… Quite annoying due to the time and expense of fitting it but hey-ho, at least I learned a new skill last night!

I need to make adjustments to the lining and finish the hem and figure out how to finish the seams in the absence of an overlocker. The crepe fabric is already fraying quite a bit. Gertie has a good tutorial here which I’m going to try.

I’ll be back at some point with pictures – obviously after I’ve finished my dissertation…obviously…

A sense of purpose

So having wanted to start a blog about lots of different things – I have decided that the scratch I need to itch (blog-wise) or is that – itch I need to scratch? Anyway, sewing is my greatest passion and makes me tingly all over! I have also been inspired by a number of other amazing sewing blogs – (links will appear shortly) and wanted to contribute in some way to the sewing blog world.

I have a number of projects I am half-way through but I’m also in the last stages of writing my doctoral dissertation, so sewing will have to wait for now. Meanwhile, to get my sewing hit, I’ve been visiting some of the blogs I mentioned earlier (in between writing) and have been distracting myself from work by dreaming about all the amazing things I’ll make once I’ve finished my work. Mmmm – drifting off into sewing fantasy world….
